Current Projects

Active Initiative

Transfer of North African Iconographic Collections

SINAS is currently finalising the transfer of North African iconographic materials preserved in Nordic collections to a partner institution in Algeria. This initiative supports the preservation, accessibility, and cross-regional circulation of historical visual heritage.

Active Initiative

Arabic Translation and Scholarly Dialogue Initiative

Ongoing translation of Volume 1 of “Nordiske slaver – afrikanske herrer” (Nordic Slaves – African Masters) into Arabic. This volume, titled «Jeg manglede intet uden Friheden.» (“I lacked nothing but freedom”), focuses on the Bergen sailor Hans Jochum Schram’s enslavement in Tunisia, 1747–1750.

The project extends beyond translation to foster scholarly exchange, with a series of upcoming panel discussions bringing together Norwegian and North African historians to examine the diary from multiple historical perspectives.
